Environment variables

Copy the example files and set your own values. This page lists which variables exist and what they are for — it never contains a real value.

Server#

See server/.env.example. A real (non-mock) stack requires:

Variable	Purpose
`SUPABASE_URL`	Origin of your Supabase gateway.
`SUPABASE_ANON_KEY`	Public client key.
`SUPABASE_SERVICE_KEY`	Server-side key. Never ship this to a client.
`DATABASE_URL`	Direct Postgres connection string.
`JWT_SECRET`	Signs Claire session tokens.
`ENCRYPTION_KEY`	Encrypts stored platform session material.

Matrix mode additionally needs:

Variable	Purpose
`MATRIX_HOMESERVER_URL`	Synapse origin.
`MATRIX_SERVER_NAME`	The server name in user IDs, e.g. claire.local.
`MATRIX_ADMIN_TOKEN`	Admin access token used to provision users and rooms.

Mobile#

See mobile/.env.example. Everything prefixed EXPO_PUBLIC_ is embedded in the app bundle and is therefore public by construction — never put a secret behind that prefix.

Variable	Purpose
`EXPO_PUBLIC_SUPABASE_URL`	Supabase origin the client talks to.
`EXPO_PUBLIC_SUPABASE_ANON_KEY`	Public anon key.
`EXPO_PUBLIC_API_URL`	Claire API origin.

Website and Ask Claire#

Variable	Purpose
`OPENAI_API_KEY`	Enables POST /api/docs/ask. Without it the route falls back to search.
`CLAIRE_DOCS_ASK_MODEL`	Defaults to gpt-5.4-mini.
`CLAIRE_DOCS_ASK_MONTHLY_BUDGET_USD`	Defaults to 50.
